A combi boiler heats water on demand and suits most homes with one or two bathrooms. A system boiler stores hot water in a cylinder and suits homes with three or more bathrooms. A regular boiler also uses a cylinder plus tanks in the loft, and is usually found in older homes.
Combi boilers
A combi boiler provides heating and hot water from one compact unit, with no hot water cylinder or loft tanks. Hot water is heated instantly when you turn on a tap. Combis are ideal for flats and homes with one or two bathrooms, and they free up cupboard space.
System boilers
A system boiler heats water that is stored in a cylinder, usually in an airing cupboard. Because there is a store of hot water, several taps and showers can run at the same time. System boilers suit larger homes with higher hot water demand.
Regular (heat-only) boilers
A regular boiler works with a hot water cylinder and cold water tanks in the loft. They are common in older homes and can be a good choice where water pressure is low or where the existing system works well.
Which is right for you?
- 1 to 2 bathrooms: usually a combi
- 3 or more bathrooms: usually a system boiler with a cylinder
- Older home with loft tanks: a regular boiler or a switch to a system or combi
